The wide world of FPS: This Just got real.

This is the beginning of the end for me as a normal person when I first got my hands on an FPS I began the crazy spin into gamer-dom. This will be the last issue of games of years past after this I will be focusing on games that have come out in the past year 2010-2011 and recent releases. So sit back and enjoy the ride as we delve into the beginning of the end for me.

Doom

Hell on Earth well maybe not Earth but Mars. You play a nameless Marine who is stationed on Mars for assaulting his commanding officer. When Computer Systems on both of Mar’s moons begin to malfunction, something fragging evil begins to pour out of one of the teleportation devices. You are now the sole marine keeping the forces of evil from getting to Earth by visiting both moons and hell itself. This game being the first real FPS you take on the view from the Marine. The reason you are a nameless marine is because you seeing the world from this marine’s eyes. This game is most notable because of one huge improvement multiplayer. No longer will you fight alone you can either fight with friends to beat the game or fight against them in a death match. The game was estimated to be installed on 10 million computers but with only one million copies sold it was also one of the first games to truly be pirated.

Duke Nukem 3D

“It’s time to kick ass and chew bubblegum, damn I’m all out of bubblegum.” Duke Nukem is notable for multiple reasons. It has controversy, it has strippers, and it has famous movie lines. This game has three episodes that follow the hero Duke from L.A. to space and back to L.A. where he finally saves the world and gets the girl. This game has a no nonsense attitude pushing the limits on what parent will actually allow their children to play but on another note it brings something else to the table free mouse movement and some of the first Cyber Athletes and the first even national online tournament. Some of those players went on to create the PGL and push online gaming to the extreme it is today.

Quake II

Taking the fight back to the Strogg, this game opens with a cinematic of marines dropping in to the home planet of the hostile cybernetic Strogg civilization. The one problem is the Strogg see it coming making it out because of a random clip to your pod it is now up to you to prepare this world for the invasion. Single player revolutionized with story based quest chains and interactive NPCs. Single player however isn’t the only new addition to this game Multiplayer brings out a new competitive team based game with Capture the Flag, expanding the now ever growing online gaming community.

Half-Life

So far we have seen a trend with FPS they revolutionized the online gaming community, Half-Life is no exception picking up right where Quake left off the innovators at Valve allowed the player base to create their own additions which brought out Counter Strike, Day of Defeat and countless other addons. But even with its amazing ability in the online field Half Life brings us an amazing story of science gone wrong and the fight of one man Gordon Freeman through the Black Mesa complex. Through the twists and turns the story develops into a cliff hanger that leaves it open for the inevitable sequel that came.

The reason why FPS dragged me deeper into the videogame world was the innovations they brought. Without FPS the computer market itself would have been held back the major reason we made better video cards was to have the edge to have the speed to have the look which ultimately made the videogame industry make better games and together they made a happy unison. The reason however that brought me to the videogame world was the competiveness the ability to beta other people, we all have it the need to be the best and that was developed and nurtured in the FPS world.
